Here’s a delicious and simple recipe for Amish Onion Fritters — crispy on the outside, tender and sweet on the inside. These golden bites are perfect as a snack, appetizer, or side dish, especially with a dipping sauce like ranch or spicy mayo.


🧅✨ Amish Onion Fritters Recipe

Yields: ~10–12 fritters

🧂 Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped or thinly sliced

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tbsp cornmeal (optional, for texture)

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ¾ cup milk (or buttermilk for more flavor)

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)


🍳 Instructions:

1. Mix the Batter:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and pepper.

  • Stir in the milk until smooth.

  • Fold in the chopped onions. The mixture will be thick — just enough to coat the onions.

2. Heat the Oil:

  • Heat about ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium to medium-high heat.

  • The oil is ready when a small drop of batter sizzles immediately.

3. Fry the Fritters:

  • Drop spoonfuls (about 2 tablespoons each) of batter into the hot oil.

  • Flatten slightly with the back of a spoon if needed.

  • Fry for about 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  • Remove and drain on paper towels.

4. Serve Warm:

  • Best enjoyed hot and crispy!

  • Serve with ranch dressing, spicy aioli, or ketchup.


🧊 Storage & Reheating:

  • Store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

  • Reheat in the oven or air fryer for a few minutes to bring back crispiness.
