Ohhh yes — Amish Onion Fritters 🧅✨
Crispy on the outside, tender and sweet inside, and dangerously snackable. This is the classic Pennsylvania Dutch–style version.
Amish Onion Fritters
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ¾ cup milk
- 1 egg
- Oil or lard for frying
Instructions
- Prep onions
Slice onions thin and separate rings. - Make batter
In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
In another bowl, whisk milk and egg.
Combine wet and dry ingredients until smooth. - Add onions
Fold onions into batter until well coated. - Heat oil
Heat oil or lard to 175°C / 350°F. - Fry
Drop spoonfuls of onion batter into hot oil.
Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown. - Drain
Remove to paper towels. - Serve hot
How they’re traditionally served
- With powdered sugar (yes, really!)
- Or alongside fried chicken, ham, or pork chops
- Sometimes with apple butter on the side
Tips for the best fritters
- Use sweet onions (Vidalia, Walla Walla)
- Don’t overcrowd the pan
- Keep oil temp steady so they don’t soak up grease
