buñuelos

Posted on October 15, 2025 by Admin

Absolutely! Buñuelos are a beloved treat across Latin America, Spain, and the Philippines, with slight variations. In Mexican cuisine, buñuelos are typically crisp, thin, fried discs dusted with cinnamon sugar — often served around Christmas or New Year’s.

Here’s a traditional recipe for Mexican-style buñuelos:

🍩 Mexican Buñuelos (Crispy Cinnamon Sugar Fritters)

Ingredients (Makes about 12 buñuelos):

For the Dough:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 cup warm milk (more as needed)

For Frying:
  • Vegetable oil (for deep frying, about 2–3 cups)

For the Topping:
  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

🧑‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Make the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.

  • Add melted butter, egg, and warm milk.

  • Mix and knead into a soft dough (add a little extra milk or flour if needed).

  • Knead for about 5–7 minutes until smooth.

  • Cover the dough with a towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.

2. Divide & Roll:

  • Divide the dough into 10–12 equal balls.

  • On a floured surface, roll each ball out into a very thin circle (about 6–8 inches wide — thinner is crispier!).

3. Fry the Buñuelos:

  • Heat about 1 inch of oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat (about 350°F/175°C).

  • Fry each buñuelo one at a time until golden brown and crisp, about 30–60 seconds per side.

  • Drain on paper towels.

4. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar:

  • While still warm, sprinkle or dredge each buñuelo in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

🎄 Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve warm or at room temperature.

  • Delicious with hot chocolate, champurrado, or café de olla.

  • Some regions drizzle them with piloncillo syrup (similar to a spiced brown sugar syrup).

💡 Tips:

  • If you’re short on time, some people use flour tortillas as a shortcut — fry and coat the same way.

  • Store in an airtight container at room temp for a couple of days — but they’re best fresh!

Let me know if you want a version from Colombia, Spain, or Filipino-style buñuelos (with cheese)!
