Butter Swim Biscuits

Posted on November 3, 2025 by Admin

Ohhh, Butter Swim Biscuits 🧈😍 — the name says it all! These golden, buttery, fluffy biscuits literally “swim” in melted butter as they bake, giving them crisp edges and soft, tender centers. They’re ridiculously easy to make — no rolling, no cutting, just mix, pour, and bake!

Here’s the classic Southern-style recipe:

🧈 Butter Swim Biscuits

(Makes 9 biscuits — one 8×8 or 9×9 pan)

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups buttermilk (see note below for substitute)

  • 1 tbsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar (optional, for a hint of sweetness)

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

1. Preheat oven

  • Set to 450°F (230°C).

2. Melt the butter

  • Pour ½ cup (1 stick) butter into an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish.

  • Place the dish in the oven while it preheats so the butter melts — then remove once melted (don’t let it brown too much).

3. Make the biscuit dough

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and (if using) sugar.

  2. Pour in the buttermilk and stir just until combined — it’ll be a thick, sticky batter (not like traditional dough).

4. Add dough to the buttered pan

  • Pour or spoon the dough directly into the melted butter in the baking dish.

  • Use a spatula to spread it evenly — it’s okay if some butter pools around the edges (that’s what makes it amazing!).

5. Score before baking (optional)

  • Use a knife to lightly score the dough into 9 squares. This makes it easier to cut after baking.

6. Bake

  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the top is golden brown.

7. Cool & serve

  • Let rest for 5 minutes before cutting.

  • Serve warm — perfect with honey, jam, sausage gravy, or even on their own! 😋

💡 Tips & Variations

  • No buttermilk? Use 2 cups milk + 2 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar. Let sit 5 minutes before using.

  • For garlic butter biscuits, add ½ tsp garlic powder and ½ tsp dried parsley to the batter.

  • Add shredded cheddar cheese and a sprinkle of herbs for a Cheddar Bay-style version.

  • These reheat perfectly in the air fryer or oven — just 5 minutes at 350°F!
