🥩 Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes & Gravy

Serves: 4 | Prep Time: 20 mins | Cook Time: 30 mins

🛒 Ingredients:

For the Chicken Fried Steak:

  • 4 cube steaks (tenderized round steak, about ½ inch thick)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • Salt & black pepper to taste

  • 2 large eggs

  • ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)

  • Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut)

For the Gravy:

  • 3 tbsp pan drippings or butter

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)

  • Salt & black pepper to taste

  • Optional: pinch of cayenne for heat

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • ½–¾ cup milk or cream

  • Salt to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes (Start First):

  • Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes.

  • Drain, mash with butter and milk until smooth and creamy. Season to taste. Cover to keep warm.

2. Prepare the Steaks:

  • Pat steaks dry and season with salt and pepper.

  • Set up a breading station:

    • Bowl 1: Flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder

    • Bowl 2: Eggs + buttermilk, whisked

    • Bowl 3: Remaining flour (optional double-dredge for extra crunch)

  • Dip steaks in flour → egg mixture → flour again. Press to adhere coating.

3. Fry the Steaks:

  • Heat ½ inch oil in a large skillet over medium heat (350°F).

  • Fry steaks one or two at a time, 3–4 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.

  • Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate or wire rack.

4. Make the Gravy:

  • Pour off excess oil, leaving about 3 tbsp in the pan (or use butter).

  • Whisk in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.

  • Slowly whisk in milk, stirring constantly until smooth.

  • Simmer 3–5 minutes until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and cayenne (optional).

🥄 Serve:

  • Plate mashed potatoes and steak.

  • Generously pour gravy over both.

  • Serve with classic sides like:

    • Green beans

    • Corn

    • Buttermilk biscuits

    • Coleslaw

🔄 Tips & Variations:

  • No cube steak? Pound out thin slices of sirloin or round steak.

  • Extra crispy coating: Let breaded steaks rest for 10 minutes before frying.

  • Air fryer version? Let me know — it can be done with a spray of oil!
