🥙 Chicken Gyros

Ingredients

For the Chicken

  • 1½ lbs (700 g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Tzatziki Sauce

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • ½ cucumber, grated and squeezed of excess water
  • 1–2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt, to taste

To Serve

  • 4–6 pita breads or flatbreads
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced red onions
  • Lettuce or arugula
  • Optional: feta cheese, olives

Instructions

1️⃣ Marinate the Chicken

  1. Mix olive oil, garlic, oregano, paprika, cumin, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  2. Coat chicken thoroughly with the marinade.
  3. Refrigerate 2–4 hours (or at least 30 minutes for quicker prep).

2️⃣ Prepare Tzatziki

  1. Combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt.
  2. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

3️⃣ Cook the Chicken

  • Skillet method: Heat oil over medium-high heat, cook chicken 5–7 minutes per side until golden and cooked through.
  • Oven method: Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes.
  • Let rest, then slice thinly.

4️⃣ Assemble Gyros

  1. Warm pita breads.
  2. Spread tzatziki on each pita.
  3. Add sliced chicken, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce.
  4. Optional: sprinkle feta and olives.
  5. Fold and enjoy!
