Chocolate Poke Cake

Posted on October 27, 2025 by Admin

A Chocolate Poke Cake is one of those rich, indulgent desserts that’s super easy to make but tastes like something from a bakery. Here’s a full description and recipe! 🍫

🍰 What It Is

A chocolate poke cake starts with a moist chocolate cake that you bake in a rectangular pan. While it’s still warm, you “poke” holes all over it — then pour something luscious (like chocolate pudding, caramel sauce, or sweetened condensed milk) over the top. The filling seeps into the holes, making every bite extra moist and flavorful. It’s then topped with whipped cream or frosting and sometimes chocolate shavings, crushed cookies, or candy bits.

🍫 Classic Chocolate Poke Cake Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients on box — usually eggs, oil, and water)

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk or 1 box (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix

  • 1 (8 oz) tub whipped topping (Cool Whip) or 2 cups whipped cream

  • ½ cup hot fudge sauce or chocolate syrup (optional for topping)

  • Chocolate shavings, chips, or crushed Oreos for garnish

Instructions

  1. Bake the cake:
Prepare and bake the chocolate cake in a 9×13-inch pan according to package directions.

  2. Poke the holes:
While the cake is still warm, use the handle of a wooden spoon or a skewer to poke holes all over (about 1 inch apart).

  3. Add the filling:

    • If using sweetened condensed milk, pour it evenly over the cake so it soaks in.

    • If using pudding, prepare it according to package instructions, then pour it over before it sets completely.

  4. Chill:
Refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to let the flavors meld.

  5. Top it off:
Spread whipped topping evenly over the cooled cake.

  6. Drizzle & decorate:
Add chocolate syrup or hot fudge and sprinkle with crushed cookies, chocolate curls, or nuts.

🍮 Variations

  • Salted Caramel Poke Cake: Replace the condensed milk with caramel sauce and sprinkle with sea salt.

  • Mocha Poke Cake: Mix coffee into the filling or topping for a café-style flavor.

  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Poke Cake: Swirl peanut butter into the pudding or drizzle over the top.
