For Carne Guisada with floor tortillas

Posted on November 6, 2025November 14, 2025 by Admin

Perfect choice — Carne Guisada with Flour Tortillas is a classic Tex-Mex and Latin comfort meal: tender, slow-simmered beef stew with rich gravy, wrapped in soft homemade tortillas. 🌮✨

Here’s how to make both parts — the Carne Guisada and fresh flour tortillas.

🌶️ Carne Guisada (Mexican-Style Beef Stew)

🧾 Ingredients

Serves 4–6

  • 1 kg (2.2 lb) beef stew meat (chuck, brisket, or stewing beef), cut into 1-inch cubes

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 large bell pepper, diced

  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped (or 1 can diced tomatoes)

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups (480 ml) beef broth or water

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp chili powder (or paprika if you prefer mild)

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

  • ½ tsp oregano

  • Optional: 1 jalapeño or green chili, chopped (for spice)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Brown the meat

    • Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

    • Add the beef and sear until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.

  2. Cook the veggies

    • In the same pot, sauté onion, garlic, and bell pepper until softened (3–4 minutes).

  3. Make the roux

    • Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables. Stir for 1 minute to cook the raw flour taste.

  4. Build the sauce

    • Add tomatoes, spices, and beef broth. Stir until the mixture thickens slightly.

  5. Simmer

    • Return the browned beef to the pot.

    • Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook 1½ to 2 hours on low heat, until the beef is tender and the sauce is thick and rich.

    • Stir occasionally and add a splash of broth if it gets too thick.

  6. Taste & serve

    • Adjust seasoning (salt, pepper, spice).

    • Serve hot with warm flour tortillas.

🌮 Soft Homemade Flour Tortillas

🧾 Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • 3 tbsp oil or softened butter/lard

  • ¾ cup warm water (as needed)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Mix dough

    • In a bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder.

    • Add oil (or butter/lard) and mix with fingers until crumbly.

    • Gradually add warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms.

  2. Rest the dough

    • Knead for 2–3 minutes, then cover and rest 15–20 minutes.

  3. Roll out

    • Divide dough into 8–10 small balls.

    • Roll each into a thin circle (about 6–8 inches).

  4. Cook

    • Heat a dry skillet over medium heat.

    • Cook each tortilla 30–45 seconds per side, until brown spots appear.

    • Stack in a towel to keep warm and soft.

🌟 Serving Suggestions

  • Spoon Carne Guisada into warm tortillas for tacos or burritos.

  • Add fresh cilantro, onions, or a squeeze of lime for brightness.

  • Serve with refried beans, rice, or avocado slices for a full meal.

Would you like me to give you a Pakistani-adapted version of this — using local cuts of beef, desi-style spices (like cumin, coriander, and garam masala), and tandoor-style tortillas (chapati-like but softer)?
