fried cabbage with sausage

Here’s a simple, classic Fried Cabbage with Sausage recipe — hearty, flavorful, and ready in about 30 minutes. 🥬🌭

🧂 Ingredients

  • 1 medium head cabbage, chopped

  • 1 lb smoked sausage (like kielbasa or andouille), sliced into rounds

  • 1 medium onion, sliced

  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil (olive or vegetable)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional, for flavor)

  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

🍳 Instructions

  1. Cook the sausage

    • In a large skillet or cast-iron pan, heat 1 tbsp of butter/oil over medium heat.

    • Add sliced sausage and cook until browned on both sides (about 5–7 minutes).

    • Remove sausage and set aside, leaving drippings in the pan.

  2. Sauté the vegetables

    • Add the remaining butter/oil to the pan.

    • Add the onion and cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes.

    • Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

  3. Add cabbage

    • Add the chopped cabbage to the pan (it will look like a lot, but it cooks down).

    • Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and red pepper flakes if using.

    • Stir well, cover, and cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.

  4. Combine and serve

    • Return the cooked sausage to the pan, stir to combine, and cook another 2–3 minutes to heat through.

    • Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions

  • Serve with cornbread or over rice for a filling meal.

  • Add a splash of apple cider vinegar or a bit of hot sauce for a tangy kick.
