Fried Cornbread Patties (Hoe Cakes)
Ingredients

1 cup cornmeal (yellow or white)

½ cup all-purpose flour

1 tbsp sugar (optional)

1 tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt
-
1 egg
-
¾–1 cup milk or buttermilk

1 tbsp melted butter or oil

Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions

Make the Batter
In a bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Add egg, milk, and melted butter. Stir until thick but scoopable. -
Heat the Oil
Heat about ¼ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Oil is ready when a drop of batter sizzles gently. -
Fry the Patties
Spoon batter into the skillet (2–3 tbsp per patty).
Flatten slightly.
Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown. -
Drain & Serve
Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve hot.

Savory: Add chopped onion, corn kernels, or shredded cheese

Southern style: Skip sugar, use buttermilk
