Here’s a simple, crispy fried cornbread patties recipe—golden on the outside, soft inside, and perfect with soups, beans, or greens 🌽


Fried Cornbread Patties (Hoe Cakes)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal (yellow or white)

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional)

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 egg

  • ¾–1 cup milk or buttermilk

  • 1 tbsp melted butter or oil

  • Vegetable oil, for frying


Instructions

  1. Make the Batter
    In a bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
    Add egg, milk, and melted butter. Stir until thick but scoopable.

  2. Heat the Oil
    Heat about ¼ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    Oil is ready when a drop of batter sizzles gently.

  3. Fry the Patties
    Spoon batter into the skillet (2–3 tbsp per patty).
    Flatten slightly.
    Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.

  4. Drain & Serve
    Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve hot.


Variations

  • Savory: Add chopped onion, corn kernels, or shredded cheese

  • Southern style: Skip sugar, use buttermilk

  • Sweet: Add extra sugar and serve with honey or syrup

  • Crispier: Use all cornmeal, no flour


Serve With

  • Beans or chili

  • Collard greens or cabbage

  • Fried fish or chicken

  • Butter, honey, or hot sauce
