Fried Green Tomatoes

Yesss — Fried Green Tomatoes 🍅✨ crispy on the outside, tangy and tender inside. Classic Southern comfort coming right up.


Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients

  • 3–4 firm green tomatoes, sliced ¼ inch thick
  • Salt & black pepper
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornmeal (or cornmeal + breadcrumbs 50/50)
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup milk or buttermilk
  • Oil for frying (vegetable, peanut, or canola)

Instructions

  1. Prep tomatoes
    Lightly salt tomato slices and let sit 5 minutes. Pat dry.
  2. Set up dredging station
    • Bowl 1: flour
    • Bowl 2: eggs + milk
    • Bowl 3: cornmeal (season with salt & pepper)
  3. Coat
    Dredge tomatoes in flour → egg → cornmeal. Press coating on.
  4. Fry
    Heat ¼ inch oil in a skillet over medium heat (about 350°F / 175°C).
    Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crisp.
  5. Drain & serve
    Transfer to paper towels. Sprinkle with a little salt while hot.

Pro tips

  • Don’t overcrowd the pan
  • Keep oil hot but not smoking
  • Thicker slices = juicier center

Variations

  • Extra crunchy: double-dip in egg + cornmeal
  • Gluten-free: cornmeal only
  • Oven or air fryer: 425°F / 220°C, spray well, flip once
