🥔🧅 Fried Potatoes and Onions (Skillet-Style)
📋 Ingredients (Serves 4):
-
4 medium russet potatoes, peeled and sliced (or diced)
-
1 large onion, thinly sliced (yellow or sweet)
-
3–4 tbsp oil or butter (or a mix)
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste
-
Optional: garlic powder, paprika, fresh herbs (parsley, thyme)
🔪 Instructions:
1. Prep potatoes
-
Slice or dice potatoes evenly for consistent cooking.
-
Optional but recommended: Soak cut potatoes in cold water for 15–30 minutes to remove excess starch for crispier texture.
-
Drain and pat dry thoroughly with paper towels.
2. Heat the pan
-
In a large skillet (cast iron preferred), heat oil/butter over medium heat.
3. Cook onions
-
Add sliced onions. Cook for 3–5 minutes until softened and slightly golden. Remove and set aside (you’ll add them back later for better texture control).
4. Cook potatoes
-
Add potatoes in a single layer. Don’t overcrowd the pan.
-
Fry undisturbed for 5–6 minutes, then flip and continue cooking, flipping every few minutes until golden brown and tender (about 15–20 minutes total).
5. Return onions & season
-
Add the cooked onions back to the skillet.
-
Season with salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings.
-
Toss everything together and cook 2–3 more minutes to combine.
✅ Tips:
-
Don’t stir too often — let the potatoes brown!
-
Use a mix of butter for flavor and oil for crispness.
-
Add bell peppers, garlic, or even bacon for extra depth.
