Hamburger & Potato Casserole

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 4–5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz / 300 g) cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

Optional add-ins

  • Paprika or smoked paprika
  • Italian seasoning
  • Frozen peas or corn
  • Bacon bits

Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Beef

  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Add onion and cook until soft.
  • Add garlic and ground beef; cook until browned.
  • Season with salt, pepper, and paprika. Drain excess fat.

2️⃣ Make the Sauce

  • In a bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup + milk until smooth.

3️⃣ Assemble the Casserole

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F.
  2. Grease a baking dish.
  3. Layer half the potatoes on the bottom.
  4. Add half the beef mixture.
  5. Spoon some sauce over the top.
  6. Repeat layers.
  7. Finish with shredded cheese.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake 15 more minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly and golden.

5️⃣ Rest & Serve

  • Let sit 10 minutes before serving.

Tips for Best Results

  • Slice potatoes very thin so they cook evenly.
  • For extra creaminess, add ½ cup sour cream to the sauce.
  • Want crispy edges? Broil for 2–3 minutes at the end.
