Here’s a hearty, satisfying version:
🍖 Hamburger Steak Bake (Oven-Baked Salisbury Steak)
🕒 Prep: 15 min | Bake: 45–50 min
🍽️ Serves: 4–6
🧂 Ingredients
For the hamburger steaks:
-
1½ lbs ground beef (80/20 works great)
-
½ cup breadcrumbs
-
1 large egg
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
½ tsp garlic powder
-
½ tsp onion powder
-
Salt & pepper to taste
For the gravy:
-
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
-
1 cup beef broth
-
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or cream of onion/chicken)
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
Optional: 1 cup sliced mushrooms
👨🍳 Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
2. Make the hamburger patties
-
In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Form into 4–6 oval patties, and place them in a lightly greased 9×13″ baking dish.
3. Sear the patties (optional but adds flavor)
-
Brown the patties in a skillet for 2–3 minutes per side. They don’t need to cook through — just get color. Then place back in the baking dish.
4. Mix the gravy
-
In a bowl, stir together the cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and sliced onions (and mushrooms if using).
5. Assemble & bake
-
Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the patties.
-
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
-
Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes, or until bubbly and the patties are cooked through (internal temp should be 160°F).
6. Serve
-
Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles, and don’t forget the gravy!
🍽️ Optional Add-ins
-
Add sliced potatoes or green beans directly to the baking dish for a one-pan meal.
-
Stir in a spoonful of sour cream or cream cheese to the gravy for a richer finish.
-
Top with a little cheddar in the last 5 minutes if you like it cheesy.
