🍔 Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

🛒 Ingredients:

For the hamburger steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 cup milk

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter (for frying)

For the onion gravy:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper to taste


👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Make the hamburger steaks:

  • In a bowl, soak breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes.

  • Add ground beef, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently to combine (don’t overwork).

  • Shape into 4 oval patties.

2. Cook the patties:

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Cook patties about 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.

3. Make the onion gravy:

  • In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until soft and caramelized (about 10–15 minutes).

  • Sprinkle flour over onions and stir well to make a roux; cook 1-2 minutes.

  • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.

  • Simmer until gravy thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Combine and serve:

  • Return hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and heat for a couple minutes.

  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite sides.


💡 Tips:

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the gravy.

  • Use a mix of ground beef and pork for juicier patties.

  • Try adding garlic powder or fresh herbs (thyme, parsley) to the patties.
