🍒☁️ Heaven on Earth Cake (a.k.a. Cherry Angel Trifle)
🧾 Ingredients:
-
1 prepared angel food cake, cubed (store-bought or homemade)
-
1 (3.4 oz) box instant vanilla pudding mix
-
1 ½ cups cold milk
-
1 cup sour cream (adds richness and tang)
-
1 (21 oz) can cherry pie filling
-
1 (8 oz) tub whipped topping (like Cool Whip), thawed
-
Optional garnish: sliced almonds, extra cherry filling, or white chocolate shavings
🔪 Instructions:
1. Prepare pudding mixture:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the instant pudding mix and cold milk until it begins to thicken (2–3 minutes).
Stir in the sour cream until smooth. Set aside.
2. Layer the cake:
In a 9×13-inch baking dish, spread half of the cubed angel food cake evenly across the bottom.
3. Add cherry layer:
Spoon about 2/3 of the cherry pie filling over the cake cubes.
4. Add remaining cake:
Layer the rest of the cake cubes on top of the cherry layer.
5. Pour pudding mixture:
Spread the vanilla pudding/sour cream mixture evenly over the cake.
6. Top with whipped topping:
Gently spread the whipped topping over the pudding layer.
7. Final cherry swirl:
Dollop the remaining cherry pie filling on top and swirl lightly with a knife or leave in small pockets.
8. Chill:
Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld and layers to set.
🍽️ Serve:
-
Scoop and serve chilled.
-
Garnish with toasted almonds, extra cherries, or even crushed graham crackers if desired.
📝 Tips & Variations:
-
No sour cream? Substitute plain Greek yogurt or more whipped topping.
-
Switch it up: Use blueberry or strawberry pie filling instead of cherry.
-
Chocolate lovers: Try chocolate pudding and a drizzle of hot fudge on top.
