That sounds amazing — a fun twist on a Greek favorite! 🇬🇷🍔
Homemade Hamburger, Peppers, and Onion Gyros combine juicy seasoned ground beef with sautéed peppers and onions, all wrapped in warm pita bread with creamy tzatziki sauce. It’s like a Greek-style cheeseburger wrap — hearty, flavorful, and easy to make at home.

🥙 Homemade Hamburger Peppers & Onion Gyros

Ingredients

(Makes 4–6 gyros)

For the beef filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • ½ onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • ½ tsp paprika (smoked or sweet)

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • Optional: ½ tsp chili flakes or cayenne for heat

For the sautéed peppers & onions:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

To serve:

  • 4–6 pita breads or flatbreads

  • Tzatziki sauce (see below or store-bought)

  • Sliced tomato & lettuce (optional)

  • Crumbled feta cheese (optional but delicious)

Instructions

1. Cook the beef mixture

  1. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Add chopped onion and sauté 2–3 minutes until translucent.

  3. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds more.

  4. Add ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks.

  5. Stir in oregano, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper.

  6. Cook until beef is browned and slightly crispy at the edges.

2. Sauté the peppers & onions

  1. In another skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.

  2. Add sliced peppers and onions.

  3. Season with salt and pepper.

  4. Cook 5–8 minutes until tender and slightly caramelized.

3. Make a quick tzatziki sauce (optional but worth it!)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt

  • ½ cucumber, grated and squeezed dry

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill or mint

  • Salt & pepper to taste

Method: Mix all ingredients and chill for 10–15 minutes before serving.

4. Assemble your gyros

  1. Warm pitas in a dry skillet or oven.

  2. Spread tzatziki down the center of each pita.

  3. Add a scoop of the seasoned beef.

  4. Top with sautéed peppers and onions.

  5. Add optional tomatoes, lettuce, or feta.

  6. Fold and wrap in foil or parchment for easy eating.

💡 Tips

  • You can mix beef + lamb or beef + turkey for a lighter gyro.

  • Add a dash of red wine vinegar or lemon juice to the cooked beef for brightness.

  • Leftovers make awesome rice bowls or salads the next day.
