Kentucky Sawdust Pie

Posted on October 18, 2025 by Admin

You’ve got great taste — Kentucky Sawdust Pie is a Southern classic that’s rich, gooey, nutty, and indulgent. Despite the odd name, there’s no sawdust involved — it gets the name from the texture of all the finely chopped goodies inside! Think pecans, coconut, graham cracker crumbs, and chocolate chips in a brown sugar custard, all baked into a flaky pie crust. 🥧✨

🥥 Kentucky Sawdust Pie

📝 Ingredients (for 1 standard 9-inch pie)

  • 1 unbaked pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

  • 1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut

  • 1 cup chopped pecans

  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

  • 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, packed

  • 4 large egg whites

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/4 tsp salt

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C).

    • Place the unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate and crimp the edges.

  2. Mix the filling:

    • In a large bowl, stir together the graham cracker crumbs, coconut, pecans, and chocolate chips.

    • In a separate bowl, lightly whisk the egg whites (just until frothy — no need to whip into peaks).

    • Add the brown sugar, vanilla, and salt to the egg whites, and mix well.

    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until fully combined.

  3. Fill the crust:

    • Spoon the mixture evenly into the unbaked pie shell.

  4. Bake:

    • Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is just set (it may jiggle slightly, like pecan pie).

    • Let cool at least 1 hour before slicing.

🍨 Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm or at room temp, with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

  • Also great drizzled with caramel sauce or chocolate syrup.

🔁 Tips & Variations

  • Sub walnuts or almonds for pecans if needed.

  • Add butterscotch chips for a twist.

  • Want it less sweet? Cut the brown sugar to 1 1/4 cups.

Would you like a mini version (great for parties), or a gluten-free or egg-free variation?
