Cabbage Layered Casserole

Ingredients (basic idea):

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, thinly sliced or chopped

  • 1 lb ground meat (beef, turkey, or sausage)

  • 1 cup cooked rice or pasta (optional)

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 can diced tomatoes or tomato sauce

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: 350°F (175°C).

  2. Prepare Cabbage:

    • Wash and thinly slice the cabbage.

    • Optionally, blanch for 2-3 minutes in boiling water to soften it slightly.

  3. Cook Meat Mixture:

    • In a skillet, heat olive oil.

    • Sauté onions and garlic until soft.

    • Add ground meat, cook until browned.

    • Stir in diced tomatoes, salt, pepper, and spices. Let simmer a few minutes.

  4. Layer the Casserole:

    • Lightly grease a casserole pan.

    • Start with a layer of cabbage on the bottom.

    • Add a layer of meat mixture over the cabbage.

    • Optionally, sprinkle a layer of cooked rice or pasta.

    • Repeat layers until ingredients are used, ending with cabbage on top.

  5. Top and Bake:

    • Sprinkle shredded cheese on top if desired.

    • Cover with foil and bake 30-40 minutes.

    • Remove foil and bake another 10 minutes until cheese is melted and cabbage is tender.

  6. Serve:

    • Let cool 5 minutes, then slice and serve warm.
