Navajo Tacos

Posted on October 27, 2025November 30, 2025 by Admin

Navajo Tacos — also known as Indian Tacos — are a delicious Southwestern dish made with crispy, golden fry bread piled high with savory toppings like seasoned ground beef, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream. 🪶🌮

They’re a beautiful fusion of Native American and Tex-Mex flavors — hearty, flavorful, and perfect for sharing.

🌾 Navajo Tacos Recipe

Serves: 4–6
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes

🫓 For the Fry Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ¾ cup warm water (plus more as needed)

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or shortening)

Instructions

  1. Mix: In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in warm water until a soft dough forms.

  2. Rest: Cover and let rest 15–20 minutes.

  3. Shape: Divide into 4–6 balls and flatten each into a disk about 6 inches wide (¼ inch thick).

  4. Fry: Heat oil (about 1 inch deep) in a skillet to 375°F (190°C). Fry each piece until golden brown on both sides — about 1–2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.

The fry bread should puff up, be crispy on the outside, and tender inside.

🌮 For the Toppings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or turkey, bison, or plant-based meat)

  • 1 packet (or 2 tbsp) taco seasoning

  • 1 can (15 oz) pinto or black beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

  • 1 cup shredded lettuce

  • 1–2 tomatoes, diced

  • ½ cup sour cream

  • Optional: sliced olives, diced onions, green chilies, or salsa

Instructions

  1. Cook the beef: In a skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess fat.

  2. Season: Stir in taco seasoning and beans; cook a few more minutes until heated through.

  3. Assemble:

    • Place a piece of fry bread on a plate.

    • Top with meat and bean mixture.

    • Add lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream.

    • Finish with any optional toppings.

🌽 Serving Ideas

  • Serve immediately while the fry bread is warm and crisp.

  • For a sweet twist, top fry bread with honey and powdered sugar instead — traditional and delicious!
