Instructions
1. Make the patties
-
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Form into 4–6 oval-shaped patties.
2. Brown the patties
-
Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.
-
Sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until nicely browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
-
Remove and set aside.
3. Make the gravy
-
In the same skillet, melt butter.
-
Add onions (and mushrooms if using) and sauté 5–7 minutes until golden.
-
Stir in flour; cook 1 minute.
-
Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup.
-
Simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
4. Combine and simmer
-
Return patties to the pan, spoon gravy over top, cover, and simmer on low heat 15–20 minutes, until patties are cooked through and flavors meld.
5. Serve
Serve hot with:
🥔 Mashed potatoes
🥦 Steamed veggies
🍞 Or buttered egg noodles
💡 Tips
-
For extra flavor, mix a little beef bouillon into the gravy.
-
You can make this ahead — it reheats beautifully.
-
Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
