🧅 Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Ingredients

For the Salisbury steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80–85% lean is best)

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • ¼ cup milk

  • 1 Tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the onion gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter

  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional, for depth)

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • 1 tsp fresh thyme or parsley (optional garnish)


Instructions

  1. Make the patties:
    In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    Shape into 4–6 oval patties.

  2. Brown the steaks:
    Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil.
    Sear patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, until nicely browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
    Remove and set aside.

  3. Make the onion gravy:

    • In the same pan, melt butter and add sliced onions.

    • Sauté for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden.

    • Sprinkle flour over onions and stir well to coat (cook for 1 minute).

    • Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth, then add Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard.

    • Simmer for 2–3 minutes, until thickened slightly.

  4. Simmer the steaks:
    Return patties to the skillet, spooning gravy and onions over the top.
    Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes, until the patties are cooked through (internal temp 160°F / 71°C).

  5. Serve:
    Spoon onion gravy generously over each Salisbury steak.
    Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme if desired.

  • Serve with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or rice to soak up that delicious gravy.

  • Add a side of green beans, peas, or roasted carrots for a classic comfort meal.
