Instructions
-
Make the patties:
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Shape into 4–6 oval patties. -
Brown the steaks:
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil.
Sear patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, until nicely browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
Remove and set aside. -
Make the onion gravy:
-
In the same pan, melt butter and add sliced onions.
-
Sauté for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden.
-
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir well to coat (cook for 1 minute).
-
Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth, then add Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard.
-
Simmer for 2–3 minutes, until thickened slightly.
-
-
Simmer the steaks:
Return patties to the skillet, spooning gravy and onions over the top.
Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes, until the patties are cooked through (internal temp 160°F / 71°C). -
Serve:
Spoon onion gravy generously over each Salisbury steak.
Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme if desired.
