Skinny twist rolls

Skinny Twist Rolls are a lighter take on classic twisted bread rolls — soft, golden, and just slightly indulgent without going overboard. They’re perfect as a side for soup or salad, or for breakfast with a little jam or honey butter.

Depending on what you’re going for — low-calorie, low-fat, or just “lighter than usual” — here’s a version that cuts back on butter and sugar without sacrificing softness or flavor.


🥖 Light & Fluffy Skinny Twist Rolls

Makes: 12 rolls | Prep Time: 15 mins (+ rising) | Bake Time: 15–18 mins


🛒 Ingredients:

  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • ¾ cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)

  • 1 tbsp honey (or sugar substitute like monk fruit or stevia blend)

  • 2 tbsp olive oil or melted light butter

  • 1 egg

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 2 – 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour or white whole wheat flour

  • Optional: egg wash (1 egg + 1 tbsp water) for shine

  • Optional topping: sesame seeds, everything bagel seasoning, garlic powder, or a pinch of sea salt


👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Activate the Yeast

  • In a bowl, combine warm water, honey, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Mix the Dough

  • Stir in oil, egg, and salt.

  • Add flour ½ cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.

  • Knead on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes (or use a dough hook in a stand mixer), until smooth and elastic.

3. First Rise

  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

4. Shape the Twists

  • Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces.

  • Roll each into a rope (~8 inches long), then twist into a spiral or knot shape.

  • Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

5. Second Rise

  • Cover and let rest for 20–30 minutes until slightly puffy.

6. Bake

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Brush rolls with egg wash or olive oil. Add any toppings if desired.

  • Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown.


🔄 Make It Your Way:

  • Lower-carb: Use a low-carb flour blend

  • Dairy-free: Use olive oil instead of butter

  • Add herbs: Mix in chopped rosemary, thyme, or chives for a savory twist
