Here’s a classic sugar cookie recipe — soft in the center, lightly crisp on the edges, buttery, and sweet. Perfect for decorating or enjoying as-is!

🍪 Classic Sugar Cookies

Yield: ~2 dozen cookies | Prep Time: 15 mins + chilling | Bake Time: 8–10 mins

🛒 Ingredients:

  • 2 ¾ cups (345g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ½ tsp almond extract (optional, but adds great flavor)

  • Extra sugar for rolling

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Mix Dry Ingredients

In a bowl, whisk together:

  • Flour

  • Baking soda

  • Baking powder

  • Salt

Set aside.

2. Cream Butter and Sugar

  • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2–3 mins).

  • Add egg, vanilla, and almond extract. Beat until smooth.

3. Combine Wet & Dry

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture.

  • Mix until dough forms — it will be soft but not sticky.

4. Chill the Dough

  • Wrap the dough in plastic wrap or place in a sealed container.

  • Chill for at least 1 hour (up to overnight) — this helps the cookies hold their shape and enhances flavor.

5. Preheat Oven

  • Set oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

6. Shape and Roll

  • Scoop tablespoon-sized balls of dough.

  • Roll in granulated sugar, and place on baking sheet 2 inches apart.

  • Optional: Flatten slightly with the bottom of a glass for a more uniform cookie.

7. Bake

  • Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until edges are just starting to turn golden.

  • Let cool on pan 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

✨ Optional Variations:

  • Cut-Out Cookies: Use 2 ½ cups flour, chill dough, then roll out and cut into shapes. Bake 6–8 mins.

  • Decorating: Frost with royal icing or buttercream once cool.

  • Add-ins: Stir in sprinkles, citrus zest, or mini chocolate chips.

Would you like a no-chill version, a soft bakery-style sugar cookie, or a frosting recipe to go with them?
