Tennessee Onions

Posted on October 20, 2025January 7, 2026 by Admin

Tennessee Onions are a sweet and savory side dish or appetizer where thick slices of onion are roasted or grilled and often glazed with a tangy-sweet barbecue-inspired sauce. They’re tender, caramelized, and bursting with flavor — a perfect Southern-style treat!

🧅🔥 Tennessee Onions Recipe

📋 Ingredients:

  • 2 large sweet onions (Vidalia or Walla Walla are great)

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the glaze:

  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce (choose your favorite brand or homemade)

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • Optional: pinch of cayenne for a little heat

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Prepare onions

  • Peel onions and slice into thick rounds, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.

  • Separate into rings if you like or keep them as large “steaks.”

2. Season and oil

  • Brush both sides with olive oil, sprinkle salt and pepper.

3. Make the glaze

  • In a small bowl, whisk together barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne if using.

4. Cook the onions

  • Grill method: Preheat grill to medium heat. Place onion slices on grill and cook 5-7 minutes per side, brushing with glaze during the last few minutes, until tender and caramelized.

  • Oven method: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place onions on a lined baking sheet, brush with glaze. Roast for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway and glazing again.

5. Serve

  • Serve warm as a side or appetizer. Great with grilled meats, burgers, or just on their own!

Variations:

  • Add fresh chopped herbs (like parsley or chives) on top before serving.

  • Mix in a splash of bourbon or whiskey in the glaze for an extra Tennessee twist.

  • Top with melted cheese for an indulgent treat.
