Baguette

Posted on January 17, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic French baguette guide—crusty on the outside, soft and airy on the inside 🥖🇫🇷

🥖 Classic French Baguette

The iconic long, thin loaf with a golden crust and soft, fluffy interior.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups (420 g) all-purpose or bread flour
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, helps with browning)
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 ¼ cups (300 ml) warm water

🔥 Instructions

1. Make the Dough

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
  2. Slowly add warm water and mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

2. First Rise

  • Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.

3. Shape the Baguettes

  1. Punch down dough and divide into 2–3 pieces.
  2. Roll each piece into a long, thin loaf (about 12–16 inches).
  3. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

4. Second Rise

  • Cover loosely and let rise 30–45 minutes until puffy.

5. Score and Bake

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C) with a baking tray of water at the bottom (creates steam).
  2. Make 3–4 diagonal slashes on top of each loaf.
  3. Bake 20–25 minutes until golden brown and crisp.

😋 Serving Ideas

  • Slice and serve with butter, cheese, or pâté
  • Use for sandwiches or bruschetta
  • Perfect for dipping into soups or stews

💡 Tips for the Perfect Baguette

  • Steam in the oven gives a crusty exterior
  • Don’t over-flour when shaping; a slightly sticky dough gives better texture
  • Let it cool completely for the best crumb
