Posted on January 17, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a hearty Hungarian Savoy Cabbage and Potato Stew recipe 🍲🇭🇺—perfect for cozy dinners:

🥬 Hungarian Savoy Cabbage & Potato Stew (Kelkáposzta Krémleves)

This traditional Hungarian stew is flavorful, filling, and easy to make, with tender cabbage, potatoes, and a paprika-spiced broth.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 1 medium savoy cabbage, chopped
  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or lard
  • 1–2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Sour cream, for serving

🔥 Instructions

1. Sauté Aromatics

  1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add onions and sauté until translucent (~5 minutes).
  3. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more.
  4. Stir in paprika (and caraway seeds, if using).

2. Add Vegetables

  • Add diced potatoes and chopped savoy cabbage.
  • Stir to coat with paprika and oil.

3. Add Broth & Simmer

  • Pour in broth, season with salt and pepper.
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 30–40 minutes, until potatoes and cabbage are tender.

4. Serve

  • Ladle into bowls and top with a dollop of sour cream.
  • Serve with crusty bread for a complete meal.

😋 Tips

  • Add smoked sausage or bacon for a meaty variation.
  • For extra flavor, sauté paprika in oil gently—don’t burn it, or it will taste bitter.
  • Can be thickened slightly with a tablespoon of flour or potato starch for a creamier stew.
