What Is Normal Blood Pressure for Your Age? A Clear, Updated Guide

Posted on February 2, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a clear, current, doctor-approved guide to normal blood pressure by age—no outdated charts, no scare tactics.

First, an important truth

👉 Blood pressure goals don’t really change with age.
Older advice that said “higher is fine when you’re older” is no longer recommended.

Modern guidelines focus on reducing heart attack and stroke risk, not just age.

What the numbers mean

  • Systolic (top number): pressure when the heart beats
  • Diastolic (bottom number): pressure when the heart relaxes

Example: 120/80 mmHg

Official blood pressure categories (adults)

Category Systolic Diastolic
Normal < 120 < 80
Elevated 120–129 < 80
High BP – Stage 1 130–139 80–89
High BP – Stage 2 ≥ 140 ≥ 90

➡️ These apply to most adults of all ages.

What’s commonly seen by age (not ideal, just typical)

Ages 18–39

  • Common healthy range: 110–120 / 70–80
  • Persistent readings ≥130/80 → worth addressing

Ages 40–59

  • Common range: 115–130 / 75–85
  • Target is still under 130/80

Ages 60+

  • Common range: 120–135 / 70–85
  • Doctors may allow slightly higher systolic only if dizziness or fall risk exists
  • If tolerated, under 130/80 is still preferred

When blood pressure may be too LOW

Low BP matters only if symptoms occur.

⚠️ Watch for:

  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue

Generally concerning if below 90/60 with symptoms.

Why your “normal” might differ

Targets may be individualized if you have:

  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Prior stroke
  • Frequent falls or frailty

That’s why your doctor may personalize your goal.

Common myths (very important)

🚫 “High BP is normal with aging” → False
🚫 “Only the top number matters” → False
🚫 “You can feel high BP” → Usually false (it’s often silent)

Bottom line

✔ <120/80 = ideal
✔ <130/80 = standard treatment goal
✔ Age alone does not justify high blood pressure
✔ Symptoms and overall health matter
