Spotted this U-shaped tool with multiple metal blades in my grandmother’s baking bin. It has a wooden handle but looks like some kind of strange knuckles.

That sounds exactly like a pastry blender (also called a pastry cutter).

It has:

  • A U-shaped metal frame
  • Several curved metal blades or wires
  • A wooden or plastic handle
  • And yes… it totally looks like strange kitchen “brass knuckles” 😄

🥧 What It’s Used For

A pastry blender is used to:

  • Cut butter into flour
  • Make pie crust
  • Prepare biscuits
  • Mix crumb toppings
  • Make scones or streusel

Instead of melting the butter, it cuts cold butter into tiny pieces, creating flaky layers in baked goods.

🧈 How It Works

You press the blades down into flour and cold butter repeatedly.
The blades break the butter into pea-sized bits, which creates:

  • Flaky pie crust
  • Tender biscuits
  • Perfect crumb toppings

🥐 Why Grandma Had One

Before food processors were common, this was the best way to:

  • Control texture
  • Keep butter cold
  • Avoid overmixing dough

Many bakers still prefer it because it gives better control than machines.

💡 Fun Fact

If you don’t have one, people often use:

  • Two knives
  • A fork
  • Their fingertips

But the pastry blender is faster and less messy.

If you want, I can show you a super easy 5-ingredient pie crust recipe so you can try using it the way your grandmother probably did.
