THEY CALL IT NATURAL MORPHINE Traditionally used to relieve muscle, joint, rheumatic pain and even gout

Posted on February 19, 2026 by Admin

It sounds like you’re referring to Devil’s Claw, often nicknamed “natural morphine” because of its strong pain-relieving effects.

🌿 Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil’s Claw)

What it is:
A medicinal plant native to southern Africa, especially Namibia and Botswana. The root is used in herbal medicine.

Traditionally used for:

  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Rheumatism
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Back pain
  • Gout

Why it’s called “natural morphine”:
It contains active compounds (like harpagoside) that have anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. While it does not contain morphine or opioids, its pain-relieving effect led to the nickname.

⚖️ Does it really work?

Clinical studies suggest it may help with:

  • Osteoarthritis pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Inflammatory joint conditions

But it is generally milder than prescription painkillers.

⚠️ Safety notes

Avoid or use caution if:

  • You have stomach ulcers or gastritis
  • You take blood thinners
  • You are pregnant
  • You have heart rhythm disorders

It can cause stomach upset in some people.

If you’d like, I can also list other herbs sometimes called “natural painkillers.”
