3 exercises to help you get pain on your leg causing sciatica: effective practice

If you’re experiencing leg pain from sciatica, gentle, targeted exercises can help relieve nerve pressure, improve flexibility, and reduce pain. These exercises are generally safe, but stop if pain worsens and consult a doctor or physical therapist if symptoms are severe.


1️⃣ Knee-to-Chest Stretch

Purpose: Stretches lower back and glutes to relieve sciatic pressure.

How to do it:

  1. Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat on the floor.
  2. Bring one knee toward your chest, holding it with both hands.
  3. Keep the other leg bent or straight on the floor.
  4. Hold 20–30 seconds, then switch legs.
  5. Repeat 2–3 times per leg.

2️⃣ Piriformis Stretch

Purpose: Relieves pressure from the piriformis muscle, which can irritate the sciatic nerve.

How to do it:

  1. Lie on your back with knees bent.
  2. Cross the painful leg over the other so the ankle rests on the opposite knee.
  3. Gently pull the bottom leg toward your chest until you feel a stretch in the buttock.
  4. Hold 20–30 seconds.
  5. Repeat 2–3 times per side.

3️⃣ Cat-Cow Stretch

Purpose: Mobilizes the spine and relieves tension in the lower back.

How to do it:

  1. Start on hands and knees, shoulders over wrists, hips over knees.
  2. Cat: Round your back upward, tucking chin to chest.
  3. Cow: Arch your back, lifting your head and tailbone.
  4. Move slowly between positions, 10–15 repetitions.

💡 Tips for Sciatica Relief

  • Avoid prolonged sitting; take frequent short walks.
  • Maintain proper posture when sitting or standing.
  • Apply heat or ice packs to the affected area as needed.
  • Strengthen core and glutes to support the lower back.
