My daughter is in tears because of this lump on her foot. She can barely walk and the doctor can’t see us until next week. Does this look serious?

I’m really sorry she’s in pain — that’s stressful, especially when you can’t get in to see the doctor right away.

I can’t diagnose without seeing it, but I can help you think through how urgent this might be.

🚨 Go to urgent care / ER now if she has:

  • Rapidly increasing swelling
  • Redness spreading around the area
  • Warmth and severe tenderness
  • Fever
  • Red streaks going up the foot/leg
  • Numbness or inability to move her toes
  • Severe pain that’s worsening quickly
  • A recent puncture wound (nail, splinter, bite)

Those could signal infection, abscess, or something that shouldn’t wait.

🟡 Common (Less Dangerous) Causes of a Painful Lump on the Foot

  • Blister or blood blister
  • Plantar wart
  • Insect bite reaction
  • Ganglion cyst
  • Bruised tissue from minor trauma
  • Ingrown toenail (if near toes)
  • Plantar fibroma (firm lump in arch)

If she can barely walk, that suggests either:

  • Significant inflammation
  • Pressure on a nerve
  • Infection
  • Or a deep bruise

🏠 What You Can Do Tonight (If No Emergency Signs)

  1. Rest & elevate the foot.
  2. Apply ice (15–20 minutes at a time, wrapped in cloth).
  3. Give age-appropriate pain relief (acetaminophen or ibuprofen if she can safely take it).
  4. Avoid tight shoes — use soft sandals or keep pressure off the area.
  5. Don’t try to cut, squeeze, or pop anything.

If you’re comfortable, you can tell me:

  • How old is she?
  • Where exactly is the lump (heel, arch, toe, top of foot)?
  • Is it red? Warm? Soft or hard?
  • Did she injure it recently?

That will help me guide you better on whether this sounds urgent or likely safe to monitor until next week.
