Shepherd’s pie

Posted on March 13, 2026 by Admin

Shepherd’s pie is a classic comfort dish made with ground meat, vegetables, and mashed potatoes baked on top. Traditionally it uses lamb (that’s why it’s called “shepherd’s”), but many modern versions use beef. 🍲🥔

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground lamb (or Ground beef)
  • 1 Onion, chopped
  • 2 Carrots, diced
  • 1 cup Peas
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 cup Beef broth
  • 4 cups Mashed potatoes
  • 1 tbsp Butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 tsp Thyme

Instructions

1. Cook the Filling

  • In a skillet, cook ground lamb or beef over medium heat until browned.
  • Add onion, carrots, and garlic; cook until softened.

2. Add Flavor

  • Stir in tomato paste, thyme, and beef broth.
  • Simmer about 10 minutes until slightly thick.
  • Add peas and season with salt and pepper.

3. Assemble

  • Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
  • Top evenly with mashed potatoes.

4. Bake

  • Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20–25 minutes until the top is lightly golden.

Optional Topping Ideas

  • Sprinkle Cheddar cheese on top before baking.
  • Use a fork to create ridges in the potatoes so they crisp nicely in the oven.

✅ Tip: Let the pie rest 5–10 minutes after baking so it slices neatly.

If you want, I can also show you a one-pan 30-minute shepherd’s pie shortcut that skips baking but tastes almost the same. 🍽️
