Traditional Onion Soup

French onion soup is a classic comfort dish known for its deep caramelized onion flavor, rich broth, toasted bread, and melted cheese topping. 🧅🍲


Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 4 large Onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp Butter
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 4 cups Beef broth
  • ½ cup Dry white wine (optional)
  • 1 tsp Sugar (helps caramelize onions)
  • Salt and Black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices Baguette, toasted
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded

Instructions

1. Caramelize the Onions

  • In a large pot, melt butter with olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 25–30 minutes, stirring often, until they become deep golden brown and sweet.
  • Sprinkle in sugar halfway through to help the caramelization.

2. Build the Soup

  • Pour in the wine (if using) and simmer 2–3 minutes to reduce slightly.
  • Add beef broth, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer for 15–20 minutes so the flavors blend.

3. Prepare the Topping

  • Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls.
  • Place toasted baguette slices on top.
  • Sprinkle generously with Gruyère cheese.

4. Broil

  • Place bowls under the oven broiler for 2–4 minutes until the cheese melts and bubbles.
