I soaked my berries in salt water and saw these white wiggling things come out. Should I just throw them away?

Posted on April 1, 2026 by Admin

What you saw is unsettling—but it’s actually a fairly common and usually harmless situation.

🐛 What those white wiggling things are

They’re most likely tiny fruit fly larvae, often from the species Drosophila suzukii.

  • These flies lay eggs inside soft fruits like berries
  • When soaked in salt water, the larvae come out
  • They’re very small, white, and worm-like

⚠️ Should you throw the berries away?

👉 Not necessarily—but it depends:

✔️ You can still eat them if:

  • The berries are otherwise fresh (not moldy or mushy)
  • You wash them thoroughly after soaking
  • You’re okay with the idea (many people aren’t 😅)

👉 These larvae are not harmful to humans if accidentally eaten

❌ You may want to discard them if:

  • There are a lot of larvae
  • The berries are soft, damaged, or overripe
  • You feel uncomfortable eating them (totally valid)

🧼 How to clean berries properly

  1. Soak in salt water (or vinegar water) for 5–10 minutes
  2. Rinse well under running water
  3. Pat dry before storing

🧠 Important reality check

  • This happens because fruit is natural and minimally treated
  • Even store-bought berries can have tiny eggs or larvae
  • Washing helps remove them—but can’t always prevent them beforehand

✅ Bottom line

You don’t have to throw them away—they’re not dangerous—but if the infestation is heavy or it puts you off, it’s perfectly reasonable to discard them.

If you want, I can show you how to pick and store berries to avoid this happening again 👍
