My Nana Swears by This Trick to Remove Ice from Her Car Windshield

Posted on December 3, 2025 by Admin

Here’s the kind of real, practical trick a lot of grandparents swear by — and it actually works without damaging your windshield:

✅ Safe, Effective Ways to Remove Ice from a Windshield

1. Warm Water Is NOT the Trick (Don’t Use It!)

Just to be clear: never pour hot or warm water on an icy windshield — it can crack the glass instantly.

Your Nana probably didn’t do that.
Here are the safe old-school tricks she may have used:

🧊 1. The Vinegar Spray Trick (Preventive Trick)

Mix:

  • 3 parts white vinegar

  • 1 part water

Spray onto the windshield the night before a freeze.

✔️ Helps prevent ice formation
✔️ Makes morning scraping much easier

Note: This prevents ice; it won’t melt thick ice instantly.

❄️ 2. The Rubbing Alcohol De-Icer Spray

This is the one many grandmas swear by for instant results:

Mix:

  • 2 parts rubbing alcohol (70–90%)

  • 1 part water

  • Optional: a few drops of dish soap (helps spread)

Spray directly onto the ice.
It melts quickly because alcohol freezes at about -89°C (-128°F).

✔️ Safe for glass
✔️ Fast
✔️ Cheap and reusable

🪣 3. Plastic Bag + Warm Hands Trick

Your Nana might also do this simple, gentle method:

  1. Take a zip-top bag

  2. Fill with warm (NOT hot) water

  3. Hold it against the windshield and slide it around

The warmth transfers slowly and safely, loosening the ice.

✔️ No risk of cracking the glass
✔️ Works faster than scraping alone

🧹 4. The “Credit Card Scraper” Trick

If you’re caught without tools, a plastic loyalty card or old gift card can scrape thin frost.

✔️ Only use flexible plastic so you don’t scratch the glass.

🧼 5. Cover the Windshield Overnight

Your Nana may use:

  • A towel

  • A piece of cardboard

  • A purpose-made windshield cover

In the morning, lift it off — no scraping needed.

⭐ Best Overall Trick

The rubbing alcohol de-icer spray is the safest, fastest, and most reliable DIY method.
