🍔 Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • ⅓ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp oil or butter

Onion Gravy

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a bowl, gently mix beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire.
  2. Shape into 4 oval patties.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
  5. Remove and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).

2️⃣ Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, add butter and onions.
  2. Cook over medium-low 10–15 minutes, stirring, until onions are soft and deeply golden.
  3. Sprinkle flour over onions and cook 1 minute.
  4. Slowly whisk in broth and Worcestershire.
  5. Simmer until thickened.

3️⃣ Finish

  1. Return hamburger steaks to the skillet.
  2. Spoon gravy over them.
  3. Cover and simmer 10 minutes, until patties are cooked through.

  • Buttered bread to soak up gravy
