Posted on January 9, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic recipe for Hungarian Plum Dumplings (Szilvás Gombóc)—soft potato-based dumplings stuffed with sweet plums, perfect for dessert 🍑✨

Hungarian Plum Dumplings Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the Dumplings:

  • 2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and boiled
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 large egg
  • Pinch of salt

For the Filling:

  • 12 small plums (or halved larger ones)
  • 12 tsp sugar (one per plum)

For Topping:

  • 1/2 cup (100g) breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 2–3 tbsp sugar
  • Optional: cinnamon sugar for extra flavor

Instructions

1. Prepare the Potato Dough

  1. Mash the boiled potatoes until smooth.
  2. Let them cool slightly, then mix with egg, salt, and flour to form a soft, pliable dough.
  3. Dust your work surface with flour.

2. Prepare the Plums

  1. Wash and pit the plums (or cut in half for larger ones).
  2. Place 1 tsp sugar inside each plum.

3. Assemble the Dumplings

  1. Take a piece of dough (~2 tbsp) and flatten it in your hand.
  2. Place a plum inside and wrap the dough around it, sealing completely.
  3. Roll gently to form a smooth ball.

4. Boil the Dumplings

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Carefully drop dumplings into the water.
  3. Cook for 8–10 minutes, until they float to the surface.

5. Prepare the Topping

  1. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add breadcrumbs and toast until golden brown.
  3. Stir in sugar (and cinnamon if using).

6. Serve

  • Roll the cooked dumplings in the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Serve warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar.

Tips & Variations

  • Sweet twist: Add a bit of vanilla sugar or cinnamon to the dough.
  • Filling alternative: Use apricots or cherries instead of plums.
  • Make-ahead: Dumplings can be boiled and then lightly fried in butter for extra flavor.

✅ Result:
Soft, fluffy dumplings with a sweet, juicy plum center, coated in buttery, golden breadcrumbs—a classic Hungarian dessert that’s irresistible.

If you want, I can make a “mini air fryer version” that’s faster and less messy, still soft and sweet, perfect for a quick treat.

Do you want me to do that?
