Ingredients

  • 3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 packet (2¼ tsp) dry yeast
  • ¾ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 1½ cups grated cheese (Trappista, Emmental, or Cheddar)
  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp milk (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
  2. Add butter, sour cream, and 1 cup cheese. Knead into soft dough.
  3. Let rise 45–60 minutes.
  4. Roll out, fold once or twice (for layers), rest 10 minutes.
  5. Cut circles, place on tray.
  6. Brush with egg wash, sprinkle remaining cheese on top.
  7. Bake at 375°F / 190°C for 15–18 minutes until golden.

  • Trappista cheese is the most traditional
  • Outside Hungary: use mild cheddar, Edam, or Gouda
