Here’s a classic, comforting Country-Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Creamy Gravy — crispy, tender, and pure Southern-style goodness. This recipe is easy, hearty, and perfect for a cozy family dinner.

🥩 Country-Fried Steak

Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Steaks

  • 4 cube steaks (or tenderized round steaks)

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • 2 large eggs

  • ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

For the Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons pan drippings

  • 3 tablespoons flour

  • 2 cups milk

  • Salt & pepper to taste

🧂 Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cubed

  • 4 tablespoons butter

  • ½ cup milk or cream

  • Salt & pepper

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (about 15 minutes).

  2. Drain, mash, and mix with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.

  3. Cover and keep warm.

2. Prepare the Steaks

  1. Pat steaks dry.

  2. Set up two bowls:

    • Bowl 1: Flour + salt + pepper + paprika + garlic powder

    • Bowl 2: Eggs + buttermilk

  3. Dredge each steak in seasoned flour → egg mixture → flour again.

  4. Press the flour in well for a good crust.

3. Fry the Steaks

  1. Heat about ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Fry steaks 3–4 minutes per side until golden and crisp.

  3. Transfer to a wire rack or paper towels.

4. Make the Gravy

  1. Pour off most oil, leaving about 3 tablespoons of drippings.

  2. Stir in 3 tablespoons flour; cook 1 minute.

  3. Whisk in milk slowly until smooth.

  4. Season generously with salt and pepper.

  5. Simmer until thick and creamy.

🍽️ Serve

  • Place a steak on each plate.

  • Add a big scoop of mashed potatoes.

  • Smother both with warm gravy.

  • Add green beans, corn, or biscuits on the side if you want the full Southern feast.

💡 Tips

  • Cube steak works best because it’s pre-tenderized.

  • For extra flavor, add ½ teaspoon cayenne to the flour.

  • If the gravy gets too thick, add a splash more milk.

If you want, I can also give you country-fried chicken, white-pepper gravy, or a sheet-pan version for easier cleanup!
