Posted on October 11, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a hearty, comforting recipe for Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy — juicy seasoned beef patties smothered in rich, savory onion gravy. Perfect served with mashed potatoes or rice!

🍽️ Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Ingredients (serves 4)

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

  • 1 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Hamburger Steaks

  • In a bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently but thoroughly.

  • Form into 4 equal-sized oval patties.

2. Cook the Patties

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Add the patties and cook about 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove from skillet and keep warm.

3. Make the Onion Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook over medium heat, stirring often, until soft and golden brown (about 10–12 minutes).

  • Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well to combine. Cook for 1–2 minutes to get rid of raw flour taste.

  • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.

  • Bring to a simmer and cook until gravy thickens, about 3–5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Combine & Serve

  • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon gravy over them.

  • Let simmer together for 2–3 minutes to meld flavors.

  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of soy sauce to the gravy.

  • You can add mushrooms to the gravy for a variation.

  • If you want thicker gravy, add a bit more flour or reduce the broth.
