Patty Melts with Secret Sauce

Posted on December 31, 2025 by Admin
Here’s a classic patty melt with secret sauce recipe 🍔🧅🥪—crispy, melty, and loaded with flavor.

Patty Melts with Secret Sauce

Ingredients (for 2 sandwiches)

For the patties

  • ½ lb ground beef

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

For the sandwiches

  • 4 slices of rye bread (or your favorite bread)

  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese (or sliced)

  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter (for grilling)

For the “secret sauce”

  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • Optional: a few drops of hot sauce

Instructions

1. Make the secret sauce

  1. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, garlic powder, and onion powder.

  2. Mix well and set aside.

2. Cook the onions

  1. Heat a little butter in a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Sauté onions until soft and caramelized, about 8–10 minutes.

3. Cook the patties

  1. Divide the beef into two patties slightly smaller than your bread slices.

  2. Season with salt and pepper.

  3. Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat, 3–4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.

4. Assemble and grill

  1. Spread secret sauce on one side of each bread slice.

  2. Layer: bread → Swiss cheese → cooked patty → caramelized onions → cheese → bread.

  3. Heat a skillet over medium-low, melt a little butter, and grill the sandwich 2–3 minutes per side until golden and the cheese is melted.

Tips & Variations

  • Extra gooey: Add more Swiss or even a slice of cheddar inside

  • Caramelized onions shortcut: Use frozen sautéed onions if short on time

  • Crispier bread: Grill over medium-low to get golden without burning

  • Secret sauce twist: Add a teaspoon of pickle relish or smoked paprika

This is crispy, melty, and packed with flavor—a perfect comfort-food lunch or dinner.

I can also make a super quick 15-minute skillet version that’s perfect for weeknights if you want.
