Patty Melts with Secret Sauce
Ingredients (for 2 sandwiches)
For the patties
-
½ lb ground beef
-
Salt & pepper, to taste
-
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
For the sandwiches
-
4 slices of rye bread (or your favorite bread)
-
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese (or sliced)
-
1 small onion, thinly sliced
-
2 tbsp butter (for grilling)
For the “secret sauce”
-
3 tbsp mayonnaise
-
1 tbsp ketchup
-
1 tsp Dijon mustard
-
½ tsp garlic powder
-
½ tsp onion powder
-
Optional: a few drops of hot sauce
Instructions
1. Make the secret sauce
-
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, garlic powder, and onion powder.
-
Mix well and set aside.
2. Cook the onions
-
Heat a little butter in a skillet over medium heat.
-
Sauté onions until soft and caramelized, about 8–10 minutes.
3. Cook the patties
-
Divide the beef into two patties slightly smaller than your bread slices.
-
Season with salt and pepper.
-
Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat, 3–4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
4. Assemble and grill
-
Spread secret sauce on one side of each bread slice.
-
Layer: bread → Swiss cheese → cooked patty → caramelized onions → cheese → bread.
-
Heat a skillet over medium-low, melt a little butter, and grill the sandwich 2–3 minutes per side until golden and the cheese is melted.
Tips & Variations
-
Extra gooey: Add more Swiss or even a slice of cheddar inside
-
Caramelized onions shortcut: Use frozen sautéed onions if short on time
-
Crispier bread: Grill over medium-low to get golden without burning
-
Secret sauce twist: Add a teaspoon of pickle relish or smoked paprika
This is crispy, melty, and packed with flavor—a perfect comfort-food lunch or dinner.
