10 Early Warning Signs of a Stroke Everyone Should Know — Take Action Quickly

A stroke can happen suddenly. Recognizing the warning signs and getting emergency help quickly can make a critical difference.

Remember FAST:

F — Face drooping
One side of the face may feel weak, numb, or look uneven.

A — Arm weakness
Sudden weakness or numbness in one arm or one side of the body.

S — Speech problems
Slurred speech, confusion, or trouble understanding words.

T — Time to seek emergency help
If these symptoms appear, call emergency services immediately.

Other possible warning signs include:

  1. Sudden severe headache with no known cause
  2. Sudden dizziness or loss of balance
  3. Difficulty walking or poor coordination
  4. Sudden vision changes in one or both eyes
  5. Numbness or weakness on one side of the body
  6. Sudden confusion or trouble understanding
  7. Difficulty speaking or finding words
  8. Trouble swallowing
  9. Sudden loss of alertness or fainting
  10. A sudden change in behavior or mental awareness
