Chicken and Dumplings

🍲 Chicken and Dumplings (Comfort Food Classic)

Warm, cozy, and creamy — this is the kind of dish that tastes like home.


🛒 Ingredients (Serves 6)

For the Soup:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken (rotisserie works great)
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • ½–1 cup milk or cream (optional, for creamier texture)

For the Dumplings:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp melted butter
  • ½ cup milk

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Build the Base

  • In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat.
  • Add onion, carrots, and celery. Cook 5–7 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in garlic; cook 30 seconds.

2️⃣ Thicken the Soup

  • Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1–2 minutes.
  • Gradually add chicken broth while whisking to avoid lumps.
  • Bring to a gentle simmer.

3️⃣ Add Chicken

  • Stir in shredded chicken and thyme.
  • Simmer 10 minutes.
  • Add milk or cream if desired.

4️⃣ Make the Dumplings

  • Mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Stir in melted butter and milk just until combined (don’t overmix).

5️⃣ Drop & Steam

  • Drop spoonfuls of dough onto simmering soup.
  • Cover with a tight lid.
  • Cook 12–15 minutes (do NOT lift the lid while they steam).

Dumplings should be fluffy and cooked through.


💡 Tips for Perfect Dumplings

  • Keep the soup at a gentle simmer, not a rolling boil.
  • Avoid overmixing the dough (this makes dumplings dense).
  • If they’re doughy inside, cover and cook a few minutes longer.
