Chicken-fried steak

🍖 Chicken-Fried Steak

Chicken-fried steak is a classic comfort food featuring tender beef, breaded and fried like fried chicken, then topped with creamy gravy.


Ingredients

  • 4 Beef cube steaks (about ½ inch thick)
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • ½ tsp Paprika (optional)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 2 Eggs, beaten
  • ¼ cup Milk
  • ½ cup Vegetable oil or enough for frying

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 2 tbsp Flour
  • 1 ½ cups Milk
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Steak

  1. Mix flour, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder in a shallow bowl.
  2. Beat eggs and milk in another bowl.
  3. Dredge each steak first in the flour mixture, then in the egg mixture, then again in flour. Press gently to coat.

2️⃣ Fry the Steak

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Fry steaks 3–4 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
  3. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  1. Remove all but 2 tbsp of oil from the skillet.
  2. Add butter and melt over medium heat.
  3. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes until lightly browned.
  4. Gradually whisk in milk, cooking until thickened.
  5. Season with salt and pepper.

4️⃣ Serve

  • Pour gravy over steaks and serve with Mashed potatoes, Green beans, or Corn.

💡 Tip: For extra tender steak, lightly pound the cube steaks before breading.
