CLASSIC TOMATO SANDWICH

Posted on February 24, 2026 by Admin

🍅 Classic Tomato Sandwich

Simple. Juicy. Perfect in peak tomato season. This old-school favorite is all about great tomatoes and good bread.

🛒 Ingredients (1–2 sandwiches)

  • 2 slices soft white bread (or sourdough)
  • 1 large ripe tomato, sliced thick
  • 2–3 tbsp mayonnaise
  • Salt
  • Freshly cracked black pepper

Optional:

  • Fresh basil
  • Flaky sea salt
  • A drizzle of olive oil

👩‍🍳 How to Make It

1️⃣ Toast or don’t toast?
Traditionalists skip toasting, but light toasting adds structure. Your choice.

2️⃣ Salt the tomatoes first
Lay slices on a plate and sprinkle with salt.
Let sit 2–3 minutes — this brings out flavor.

3️⃣ Spread mayo generously
Coat both slices of bread edge to edge.
(The mayo acts as a moisture barrier.)

4️⃣ Layer the tomatoes
Overlap slightly so every bite gets tomato.

5️⃣ Pepper & optional basil
Add cracked pepper and fresh basil if using.

6️⃣ Close, slice, and eat immediately
This sandwich is best fresh — it gets soggy if it sits.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Use room-temperature tomatoes for maximum flavor.
  • Heirloom tomatoes make it next-level.
  • A pinch of sugar can balance acidity if tomatoes aren’t very sweet.

🔥 Delicious Variations

  • 🥓 Add crispy bacon (BLT vibes)
  • 🧀 Add sharp cheddar or fresh mozzarella
  • 🌶 Add a pinch of red pepper flakes
  • 🥑 Add avocado for creaminess

This is one of those recipes where quality matters more than complexity.
