Croque monsieur

Here’s a classic Croque Monsieur recipe — the ultimate French ham and cheese sandwich, baked until golden with a creamy béchamel sauce.


🥪 Ingredients (Serves 2–4)

For the Sandwich:

  • 4 slices of white or sandwich bread
  • 4 slices of ham (cooked)
  • 4 slices of Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 1–2 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)

For the Béchamel Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup milk (warm)
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

  • 2 tbsp grated Gruyère
  • 1 tsp melted butter

🥣 Instructions

1️⃣ Make Béchamel Sauce

  1. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes (don’t let it brown).
  3. Slowly whisk in warm milk until smooth.
  4. Add salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.
  5. Simmer 2–3 minutes until thickened.

2️⃣ Assemble Sandwiches

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread Dijon mustard (if using) on bread slices.
  3. Layer: bread → ham → cheese → bread.
  4. Pour a spoonful of béchamel over the top of each sandwich.

3️⃣ Bake / Broil

  • Sprinkle extra grated Gruyère on top.
  • Bake 10–12 minutes until heated through.
  • Optional: Broil 1–2 minutes for a golden, bubbly top.

4️⃣ Serve

  • Serve hot with a simple green salad.

💡 Tips for the Perfect Croque Monsieur

  • Cheese Choice: Gruyère is traditional, but Swiss or Emmental work well.
  • Béchamel Shortcut: Use 2–3 tbsp store-bought creamy sauce if short on time.
  • Extra Crispy: Lightly toast the bread before assembling.
  • Variations:
    • Croque Madame: Add a fried egg on top.
    • Add Herbs: Sprinkle thyme or chives in the béchamel.
