🍰 Crumb Cake (Crispy, Buttery Topping)

Ingredients

Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder

  3. Pour cake batter into prepared pan.
  4. Make crumb topping: mix dry ingredients, cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  5. Sprinkle crumbs evenly over cake.
  6. Bake 35–40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

Ingredients

Dough:

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

Filling (Chocolate Example):

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or cocoa powder + sugar
  • 1/4 cup softened butter

Egg Wash:

  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tbsp water

Instructions

  1. Mix warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar; let sit 5–10 min until frothy.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add eggs, butter, and yeast mixture; knead into smooth dough.
  3. Let rise 1–2 hours until doubled.
  4. Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread filling evenly.
  5. Roll dough tightly into a log, then slice lengthwise. Twist strands together to form a braid.
  6. Place in a greased loaf pan. Let rise 30–45 min.
  7. Brush with egg wash. Bake 30–35 min at 350°F (175°C) until golden.

  • Crumb Cake: For extra flavor, add a tsp of cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter.
  • Babka: Swap chocolate for cinnamon-sugar, Nutella, or even a fruit jam filling.
