Urine odors in a bathroom are usually caused by urine residue on surfaces, around the toilet base, or in grout—not just in the toilet bowl. Here are six practical ways to eliminate the smell and keep the bathroom smelling fresh:
- Clean with an enzyme-based cleaner. These cleaners break down the compounds in urine that cause lingering odors and are especially effective around the toilet base and floor.
- Clean overlooked areas. Wipe the outside of the toilet, the underside of the seat, hinges, flush handle, nearby walls, and the floor around the toilet, where splashes can accumulate.
- Use a disinfectant for routine cleaning. Regular cleaning with an appropriate bathroom cleaner helps remove bacteria and prevent odors from returning.
- Improve ventilation. Run the exhaust fan during and for 15–20 minutes after using the bathroom, or open a window if possible. Reducing humidity also helps prevent musty smells.
- Wash absorbent items regularly. Bath mats, toilet rugs, and even fabric shower curtains can trap odors. Launder them according to their care instructions.
- Add a pleasant scent after cleaning. Once the source of the odor is gone, use an air freshener, essential oil diffuser, or a bowl of baking soda to help keep the room smelling fresh. Air fresheners mask odors—they don’t remove the source.
If the odor persists despite thorough cleaning, check for less obvious causes such as:
- Urine trapped under the toilet due to a worn wax ring or leaking seal.
- Leaks around the toilet or plumbing.
- Mold or mildew in damp areas.
Addressing those underlying issues is often necessary to eliminate persistent bathroom odors.
