Grandma’s Chocolate Pie

Posted on January 7, 2026January 7, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Grandma’s Chocolate Pie—rich, silky, old-fashioned, and made the way many grandmas did it: from scratch, no shortcuts, and pure comfort. 🍫🥧

Grandma’s Chocolate Pie (Old-Fashioned Recipe)

Ingredients

Pie Filling

  • 1 baked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch (or ¼ cup flour, old-style)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2½ cups whole milk
  • 3 large egg yolks (save whites for meringue)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional Topping (Classic Meringue)

  • 3 egg whites
  • ¼ tsp cream of tartar
  • ½ cup sugar

(You can also top with whipped cream if you prefer.)

Instructions

1. Make the Chocolate Filling

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
  2. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick and bubbling (about 8–10 minutes).
  4. In a bowl, lightly beat egg yolks. Slowly whisk in a ladle of hot chocolate mixture (to temper).
  5. Pour egg mixture back into the saucepan.
  6. Cook 2 more minutes, stirring constantly.
  7. Remove from heat. Stir in butter and vanilla.

2. Fill the Pie

  • Pour hot filling into the baked pie crust.

3. Make the Meringue (Optional but Very “Grandma”)

  1. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
  2. Gradually add sugar and beat until stiff, glossy peaks form.
  3. Spread meringue over hot filling, sealing edges to crust.

4. Bake

  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 12–15 minutes, until meringue is lightly golden.

Cool & Serve

  • Let pie cool at least 2 hours to fully set.
  • Slice and serve plain or with a glass of cold milk—just like Grandma would. 🥛

Grandma Tips (Passed Down Wisdom)

✔ Stir constantly—this pie scorches easily
✔ Seal meringue to crust so it won’t shrink
✔ Never rush cooling time
✔ Tastes even better the next day
